When starting your review process for inground basketball hoops, it helps to know what the right questions are to ask. The following guide is a simple, step by step breakdown of what to look for in an in-ground basketball hoop system.

InGround Basketball Hoop Ground base
The first concept to understand is how the hoop system will be placed into the ground. While this may seem like a no-brainer at first, we have found that choosing the right type of base for your inground basketball hoop will make a significant difference in how you and our family enjoy the hoop over it’s lifetime with your family.

Essentially there are 3 types of in-ground placement concepts that you can select from. The first is called a simple inground burial. This concept was around when our fathers started to have more sophisticated basketball systems and as the suburbs grew. It involves digging a hole about 4 feet deep, placing the pole of a basketball system in place (either before or after you have the backboard system in place) and then filling the hole with concrete. The trick is to get the pole to be straight while the concrete hardens and to be sure that the height of the pole when in its final resting spot will be sufficient to have the rim be at the ten foot mark when the project is complete.

I have installed lots of these hoops systems and have a great knack for getting the height to be correct. Just place bricks at the very bottom of your hole to give the hole some stability while it is drying and you will be just fine. Attach two levels to the pole at 3 and 6 o’clock and you be sure it is not leaning as the concrete dries. I recommend NOT putting the basketball backboard on the pole until the concrete is dry. I know your kids will want to play right away and not wait but they will appreciate the extra day it takes for the installation while they shoot for years at a rim that is 10 feet high and is straight.

The second type of inground system is called a sleeve system. In this system you dig the same hole as we mentioned above but you only put a sleeve into the hole. These sleeves come with very good markings to get it to measure 10 feet when the pole is placed into the sleeve and the same leveling trick works as described above (2 levels placed at 3 and 6 o’clock). Once the sleeve dries in the concrete the pole slides in, you attach the backboard ad you are playing 3 on 3 in no time.

The sleeve installations are sold as being somewhat transportable in that if you would move you should be able to pull the pole out of the sleeve , pack it up and move to a new location. It has been my experience that the pole becomes one with the sleeve after facing several freezes and thaws and all the types of weather that we get in the Midwest. In one recent pull that we attempted we gave up after about 30 minutes of no-budge pulling.

The third type is the type used by the more expensive inground basketball hoop systems and is called a J-Bolt with a Pier. This is the unit we have in our backyard and is my preferred installation. A 4 foot deep hole is dug and a square pipe is inserted following the same measuring and leveling as with the other two types of in-ground basketball hoop systems. On this type a plate is attached to the top with a hinge. This hinge allows for you to completely assemble your backboard system and pole on the ground then raise it up while it swings to the upright position and then gets bolted into place. This system allows for complete transportablity while leaving behind a small plate in the ground if you need to move the entire unit. A separate benefit is that you can level the system by twisting the bolts once it is in the ground. We have moved ours once as the kids grew older – we expanded our court to include a 3-point line and had to re-center the inground basketball hoop. It was easy, inexpensive and well worth the added cost on the front end.

In-Ground Basketball Hoop Adjusting Mechanism
One of the most significant considerations for a family to review prior to selection of an in-ground basketball hoop is the height adjusting mechanism. When we purchased ours I simply had the smallest of our children try it out in the showroom to be sure that he could crank it up and down without assistance from us. He was 9 at the time and was able to move each of the units without an issue so I knew that we could not go wrong. Listed below is a quick review of each of the different mechanisms used to adjust an Inground basketball hoop.

Each of the mechanisms work in the same way – the rims can typically be adjusted anywhere from five feet up to regulation ten feet (some only go to six feet). They use a counter-balance system to offset the weight that is being lifted. The mechanisms are all safely operating inside of the poles so there is no risk if getting pinched fingers or jammed hands when moving the hoop up or down. Another great convention is that they no longer need pins or anything mechanical to be inserted in order to hold their position. The units glide to a position and then stay in place – that is it. Most of the better units also have a height gage that tells you how high the rim is at any point in time – that takes all the guess work out of your hands and you are ready to play.

While some of the less expensive and lighter inground basketball hoop systems do not have an adjustment system in place they have made that decision to not have one with some very good data to support their decision. The basketball hoops of today have been through countless consumer reviews and usability studies. If you are evaluating a unit that does not have a mechanism it likely does not need one. It is likely light enough to move up and down easily and the manufacturer elected to keep the cost down by not adding it to the unit. My advice is to try it out and then make a decision if it is needed or not. If it is needed you will likely have to move up to a different in-ground basketball hoop model.

Some system have a cable attached to a wench inside of the basketball pole. These systems are easy to operate, use the weight of the backboard to help the system float downward and have plenty of control when raising the rim from a lower position. The cable is attached at the factory so it will not need maintenance and because the housing is enclosed it will not be subject to wear and tear from the weather.

Other systems have a cylinder that acts like a shock absorber to ease in the positioning of the backboard and rim. Typically the cylinder is activated by squeezing a lever that allows the movement to become active. The rim height will lock in place once the level is released making the units smooth and easy to operate.

The in ground hoop system at our house has a crank style handle to help with height adjustments. It is well geared so that moving the unit either up or down requires the same amount of torque from your arm. These systems are built by having larger springs control the counter-balance mechanism inside of the poles and attached to the backboard unit. These types of mechanisms are the most popular on the higher end in-ground basketball hoop systems and are my preferred type of mechanism.

Adjustable Basketball Hoops

Adjustable Basketball Hoops have come a long way in technology and design over the last 20 years. The days of heavy lifting to a precision point to then have a friend stick a metal bolt into a socket to hold the height of an adjustable basketball hoop have long passed. The days of hanging an adjustable basketball hoop from the top of your garage and then watching as the bolts ripped a hole in the roof as the unit came pummeling back to earth left us in the late 80’s. Today’s adjustable basketball hoops are manufactured for safety, ease of use, strength and durability.

Adjustable Basketball Hoop Safety
Safety is engineered directly into the product as design teams set out to find ways to allow the smallest and youngest of players to be able to enjoy having an adjustable basketball hoop in their driveway. Time was spent considering the total weight of the adjustable basketball hoop system in relation to the backboard and rim configuration that would actually be moving. Care was taken to be sure that pins are not used that may have led to fingers being pinched and hands being jammed into sliding metal poles as they contract to lower an adjustable basketball hoop.

Adjustable Basketball Hoop Ease Of Use
The systems today generally fall into one of 3 types of categories for designs to aid in the movement of adjustable basketball hoops. Probably the most ingenious convention introduced was the use of counter-balance weights to offset the weight of the basketball pole and backboard unit. These weights allow the end user to feel as though they are moving a fraction of the total weight of the adjustable basketball hoop while easily moving what can be up to 300 pounds of metal and acrylic.

The second engineering most beneficial introduction was the use of pulley systems that have been moved inside of the hollow poles. This has been terrific for two main reasons. The first is that when the pulleys were outside there was a constant risk of getting hands and fingers pinched between the cables and the hand crank or the pulley wheel – that has been eliminated. The second reason is that pulley systems do what they do best, allow for more weight to be lifted than the actual force being applied to lift it. So smaller people and people with less strength are able to move the adjustable basketball hoops up and down without always having to have Dad help out. For development of younger players, this is a great step forward.

The third invention was the use of an air cylinder and a hand crank to be able to offer the premium adjustable basketball hoops the ease of movement that was previously only enjoyed by the smaller systems. The air cylinder acts as a pneumatic device to maintain the current position of the pole as it is raised and lowered. The cylinder smoothes out the force required to raise or lower the unit while keeping constant force, allowing the crank to move through its screw designed unit to easily move the adjustable basketball hoop system.

Adjustable Basketball Hoops Strength and Durability
Not long ago adjustable basketball hoops were inferior to their in ground, permanent counter parts. The mechanisms were not in place to allow for high quality steel and heavy acrylic backboards to be used because they could not be raised or lowered without a winch system being installed. This system proved too costly for most hoop fans, few were sold and consumers did not consider them often as they were purchasing hoop systems. The introduction of better mechanized raising and lowering capabilities led to better grades of steel being used in the pole and support systems which then provided the ability to support better glass and acrylic backboards. This capability made them attractive to consumers and now adjustable basketball hoop systems are one of the best purchases for the aspiring basketball athlete to have in his or her driveway while they work on their game.

What’s the Right Age for Your Family to Purchase a Kids Basketball Hoop

The simple answer is – as soon as your kids can crawl! The more practical answer is that you should get your first kids basketball hoop when you can afford it and when your house has enough room to have it around without creating a large amount of clutter.

A basketball hoop for kids can be about whatever you would like to make of it. They come in all sizes and all price ranges. As a basketball enthusiast my message is that while it does not matter what size or shape your kids basketball hoop takes, you should make sure that you have one available at all times. The most important thing that you can do for your kids to help them to enjoy the game of basketball as they get older is to give them a place to play from the youngest of ages.

Plastic Basketball Hoops for Kids are Inexpensive

The great news for people interested in purchasing a kids basketball hoop is that they are very inexpensive. Plastic models available at many national toy stores can be purchased for less than 30 dollars. The kids basketball hoop models they carry are easy to setup with most just requiring a quick click to put the units together. The joy that your kids will get from them is immeasurable.

The units are adjustable and can place the height anywhere from 2 feet up to 6 feet high. This makes these types of units perfect for placement in the corner of the family room or basement. They are also terrific outside on the back patio.

My Personal Kids Basketball Hoop

When I was kid my parents spoiled us by having a kids basketball hoop in the family room that was an adjustable plastic unit and also by placing a small kids basketball hoop above our closet door in each of our bedrooms. That small basketball hoop allowed me to spend countless hours with my brothers rolling up sock balls and working every possible angle to shoot that sock wad into the hoop without hitting the roof of the room. We could make shots from about every spot in the room including laying flat on our backs from 16 feet across the room. It was fun.

Older Kids Basketball Hoop Models

As we grew up we advanced to bigger and better basketball hoops. My dad purchased a basketball hoop that we mounted above the garage to the roof. That worked out terrifically well until we started to bump into it so much that the bolts began to loosen from the garage roof. We knew it was time to move our kids basketball hoop to the other side of the driveway and to a pole of its own. That was the best thing we did for our game. That move allowed us to increase or shooting range and to play games with all of our buddies for hours on end in the safety and comfort of our driveway. Thanks Mom and Dad!

Gorilla Basketball Hoops

Gorilla Basketball HoopsGorilla Basketball Hoops - 2Gorilla Basketball Hoops - Hoop System

Ok, I know that they are not actually called Gorilla basketball hoops, but that is what people put into the internet to search for the famous basketball hoop manufacturer – Goalrilla. It is an easy thing to do and full credit should be given to the people who thought up the name of the brand. Who knew that the world would think of them as gorilla basketball hoops and got Goalrilla basketball hoops. Like someone famous once said, any publicity is good publicity.

It is also not a far stretch for the salesperson that you are speaking with to be able to figure out what brand you are referring to when you ask for gorilla basketball hoops rather than Goalrilla basketball hoops. Let’s take a closer look at what makes gorilla basketball hoops, or Goalrilla basketball hoops, such a great brand.

One Piece Steel Pole – this feature adds tremendous strength to the overall basketball unit by not having any additional connections that may serve to lessen the overall strength. If you have players who can dunk or who want to lower the rim and hang on while they practice their best NBA moves – this is a great unit for you. It will not bend or break under any amount of pressure that your family will put on it.

Powder Coating – Powder coating of all visible pieces of the basketball hoop system ensures a long life in any type of weather. Powder coating keeps the unit looking great and also keeps the weather on the outside of the unit – making it rust resistant for years.

Simple Crank Height Adjustment – Goalrilla has perfected the hand crank system by using counter weights inside of the basketball hoop unit to make raising or lowering the sturdy backboard and rim a breeze. Even your youngest will be able to do it without assistance.

Pro-Style Rim – This rim is an attractive break away unit that will bend if a larger player hangs on it attempting to avoid injury from a high jumping play or while dunking and hanging on the rim. The rim will give and then snap back into the original position quickly as the rim is released. The best part of all is that as this happens on a repeated basis the rim will always snap back to the exact measurement while keeping a soft shooter’s rim feel. A shooter’s rim is the style that every player wants – a rim that is tempered enough to be able to cushion a shot and allow the shot that hit the rim a second chance to roll around the rim and actually go in.

Easy Install Mounting System – allows for each leveling and contractor installed like strength when the unit is in place. One of the most important factors of installing a basketball hoop correctly is to have the rim level and exactly ten feet in height when the job is completed. The manner with which the Goalrilla unit is setup allows for easy adjustment of four eye bolts to allow for perfect leveling and for exact height to be obtained.

The Best Places to Find Basketball Hoops For Sale

The best places to find basketball hoops for sale is likely exactly where you would think. Shopping centers, big box outlets, kids toy stores, specialty retail stores that cater to outdoor recreation and, of course, online websites.

Basketball Hoops for Sale Through Conventional Means

When looking for basketball hoops on sale from the conventional retail establishments it is best to do a quick comparison shop online. By doing so you will be armed with the different types of brands offered, the price ranges available, the installation services offered by the store if you are getting an inground basketball system or any other types of setup and assembly services they might provide. Most stores will do the assembly for you but you need to get the unit home, which means that you will need a large car or pickup truck to be able to move the unit home.

Basketball Hoops for Sale Through Specialty Retail Stores

Specialty Retail Stores offer terrific value when looking for basketball hoops for sale. These types of stores offer a full complement of products designed to help your family enjoy their free time. Most offer high end swing sets and playground equipment and almost all of them offer the ability to install a basketball court (the cement or playing surface) in additional to performing the installation of the basketball hoop itself.

The specialty stores tend to be one of my favorite destinations when looking for a basketball hoop for sale because they offer the expertise needed to be sure you are purchasing the right type of basketball hoop system for your family and for your budget. After considering the expertise and services level offered, the biggest thing I like about specialty stores is that they want to have you as a customer. A big box store or a toy store will gladly sell you a basketball hoop and wish you the best of luck in getting it setup. A specialty store knows that you just purchased some of their reputation when you laid your credit card down and they want you to come back to buy more someday in addition to telling all of your friends about the great purchase you just made. They have skin in the game so it matters to them.

Another win for the specialty store is that they have the ability to negotiate, at least a little bit. There is nothing wrong with asking for a discount from a specialty store. Chances are they have a commercial account representative who works out competitive deals all day long on the same equipment so there is no need to feel bashful about asking for 5-10 percent off the list price or for free installation or delivery. Just ask – the worst they can say is no and I guarantee you their feelings will not be hurt by asking. You may just be surprised by their response. You can thank me later : )

Basketball Hops for Sale Online

Finally, when seeking basketball hoops for sale, check out the specialty websites that exist specifically for that purpose. Be sure to ask them about shipping charges, as these units can be heavy and also be sure to ask if they can help setup local installation requirements with a contractor. While they won’t take final responsibility for the installation, they will recommend someone who they have worked with before in your area and you can feel comfortable knowing that you got a great deal and that your installation will go without a hitch.

Basketball hoops for sale are everywhere – go find one and enjoy!

Basketball Hoops Outdoor in the Midwest

I live in an area of the country where a person can see just about any type of basketball hoops outdoor that they would want to evaluate. Within a few miles of my house I can get into the country where the basketball hoop outdoor environment means everything from a small portable basketball hoops to a large, commercial basketball hoop that has had a foundation poured to support a complete game of four on four. It is on these types of drives that I try to study the pulse of the basketball playing public so I can properly set my sites on what types of products and services the consumer really wants and needs.

I think that basketball hoops outdoor systems vary greatly across demographic lines. As I drive into the more rural settings of the Midwest I am greeted by modular home parks and smaller home settings that were built after the second world war. These towns, and the basketball hoop outdoor play surroundings that that offer are usually meager in nature. The standout outdoor basketball hoops really do stand out in the type of environment. Usually there is a public park who might have gone all out in their outdoor basketball hoop setup or a local school where emphasis was placed on having a great basketball hoops outdoor environment for the children to play with. I have even driven by some schools holding their summer basketball camps outside because of the nice outdoor basketball hoops they took the time and care to install.

Portable Basketball Hoop Outdoor Playsets

The portable basketball hoop outdoor playsets are among the most popular that exist today. They are very popular because they are affordable, easy to assemble, work great in about any driveway or backyard setting and have the ability to be taken down in a flash if the family moves. They are truly portable. The rim and backboard options on these basketball hoop outdoor systems are as varied as the price ranges that a consumer would like to pay for the set, and can be almost pro-like or very simple to allow the youngest of basketball players to play.

InGround Basketball Hoop Outdoor Systems

These are my favorite, as I have mentioned throughout this website, because of the great options that they offer to a homeowner for the incremental expense. Most of the time the inground basketball hoop outdoor systems are adjustable using a crank shaft mechanism with a set of counter balance weights or a pneumatic system that may be a little harder to move up or down but locks in place with a simple release of the mechanism.

Inground basketball hoop systems are mounted wither by putting the actual pole into concrete and leveling and measuring the rim as it is placed in the hole or they use a bolt-in mechanism that allows you to place the base unit in the ground and then to simply attach the pole and rim/backboard combination to the grounded portion by attaching 4-6 bolts. The best part of these types of units is that the leveling and measuring are done by simply adjusting the bolts to ensure the proper height and angles are reached during installation.
